PA Consulting brings ingenuity to life for truly inclusive working for all

The Speak Out Dashboard is now live and hosted by Speak Out Revolution, an award winning Not-For-Profit on a mission to cancel the culture of silence on harassment and bullying in our workplaces.

In collaboration with Speak Out Revolution PA Consulting co created the Speak Out Dashboard which shares global insights into workplace harassment & bullying and the route to resolution for targets of poor behaviours.

We virtually sat down with the key people involved in the dashboard development to get their insights into the collaboration and how the Speak Out Dashboard empowers everyone to speak out for truly inclusive workplaces. Our Q&A features insights from:

What sparked the collaboration between Speak Out Revolution and PA Consulting?

It was actually very random! I happened to mention on a call with one of my connections that Speak Out was looking for support with Dashboard development. PA Consulting were named as THE organisation to best support our work, so they reached out to Mehdy on our behalf and to our delight Mehdy pulled together the dream team with Louis supporting technical development and Sophie supporting user design. We were so lucky to have their support and a great example of having a wonderful professional network! Marie

What attracted PA Consulting to collaborating on this project?

We believe in the “power of ingenuity to build a positive human future in a technology-driven world.” This is the core principle at PA Consulting and seeing the brilliant work that Speak Out Revolution is doing immediately seemed like a perfect demonstration of this. Helping to empower individuals and bring about a revolution to prevent bullying and harassment in the workplace through the use of data, visualisation and digital design was a brilliant opportunity that fit perfectly with our skills and principles. What was the process for developing the dashboard?

We followed a hands-on, user-centric iterative design process. We completed user research and created personas to understand the context of use for the dashboard, uncover latent needs and specify user requirements. When our user’s wants, needs and expectations became clear we sketched and co-designed as many different ideas as possible to address these needs.

Considering information architecture, content, visual design and user flow. We then refined these designs, wireframing, prototyping and producing high fidelity mock-ups, whilst ensuring accessibility standards were met. This process was iterative and we consistently tested our ideas with target users and stakeholders to verify that our dashboard achieves its goals. What did you enjoy most about this collaboration?

For me what really drove the project and the desire to create the best outcome possible was the passion that the Speak Out team had to raise awareness of workplace harassment and highlight that to as big an audience as possible through people’s own experiences. This shone through in the wealth of innovative ideas that they had for the dashboard in our weekly design sessions, which gave the PA team a clear sense of purpose in what needed to be done whilst striving to go above and beyond. Working with the PA team was an amazing opportunity to see user-centred design in action. The knowledge and experience the team brought to the collaboration allowed us to move forward our initial concept of a dashboard, to a minimum viable product in a short space of time. The collaborative, iterative approach we took, meant that we were all driving for the same goal, everyone on the team had a voice and the environment that was created led to some truly innovative ideas. What challenges did you experience?

Our biggest challenge, from the Speak Out perspective, was ensuring the confidentiality and anonymity of our lived experience data. This was at the forefront of our early discussions and we ultimately agreed that the cleanse, transformation and handling of Speak Out survey data would reside with the Speak Out Revolution team. 

For dashboard development purposes, we provided a test data set to PA Consulting which consisted of a subset of our data with sensitive information such as company name and personal stories redacted. 

We feel confident that, going forward, we can effectively collaborate with organisations to bring positive change while maintaining an independent and impartial offering which protects the anonymity of those we hope to serve. Marie

How does the Speak Out Dashboard support the Speak Out mission?

The dashboard allows Speak Out Revolution to present the global insights collected from the Speak Out Survey, open source so current and future targets of these behaviours are equipped to effectively navigate their poor experiences. This platform delivers the ability to empower organisations to gain insights from the data to optimise their diversity and inclusion strategies to drive positive change based on employee lived experience.

The dashboard is integral to the unique mission of Speak Out Revolution, as the independent, impartial body leveraging data driven insights to disrupt the status quo of bullying and harassment in the workplace. It enables Speak Out to deliver on our key guiding principle: “Transparency, in everything we do. Always.” Frances
